In het boek De grenzeloze generatie wordt duidelijk wat de persoonlijke en maatschappelijke consequenties zijn van de gebrekkige overdracht van zelfbeheersing en het nemen van verantwoordelijkheid. Dit leidt onder meer tot schooluitval, obesitas, agressie, alcoholmisbruik, een focus op uiterlijkheden en toenemend onbehagen. En een toenemend beroep op de jeugdzorg. Een leger hulpverleners en een veelheid aan regels krijgen de problemen maar niet onder controle.

Leuk gezegd, maar sprak koning Salomon in het oude Egypte niet al van de verloedering van de jongere generatie? Wat een briljant stukje oppervlakkig onderzoek van Motivaction (de heren Martijn Lampert en Frits Spangenberg). Zo zijn we dik, gaan we niet naar school, zijn we agressief, gebruiken we verdovende middelen en durven we ook nog bij Jeugdzorg aan te komen.

Maar, is het wel zo slecht gesteld met jongeren? We hebben zeker een giga-generatiekloof, dat komt ook omdat de moderne samenleving veel dynamischer is dan de uit de tijd van onze ouders. In de jaren ’70 had je namelijk nog geen telefoon die je uit je zak kon pakken en waar dan ook ter wereld kon chatten. (Dat woord hadden we ook nog niet.) Volgens mijn moeder (favoriete uitspraak ‘Toen ik zo oud was als jij!’) werd de telefoon enkel door vader en moeder gebruikt en liep zij zelf altijd buiten. Wat ze altijd vergeet is dat haar generatie ook bestond uit hippies, krakers en gigantische stapels marihuana erdoor heeft gejaagd.

Onze samenleving maakt dat we veel sneller en makkelijker kennis kunnen opdoen en contacten leggen, we krijgen daardoor veel vroeger meer te zeggen en ondernemen ook meer. Dat is aan de ene kant oneerlijk en beangstigend voor onze ouders, want het is niet iets dat ze gewend zijn en aan de andere kant een geweldige kans voor groei en productiviteit. Wat dan wel weer typerend is dat ouders kinderen tegenwoordig veel meer dan vroeger proberen te beschermen en tegenhouden (op straat spelen is gevaarlijk, altijd fietsen met zijwieltjes en nooit zonder helm, hand, pols, scheen en knie beschermers rolschaatsen.) Misschien was de extra-grote generatiekloof beangstigend voor de onderzoekers, wie weet. Ik ga het onderzoek niet verder afkraken, dat is al genoeg gedaan (hier en in de NRC•Next van gisteren).

Ondergetekende schreef dit op station Utrecht, genietend van een ‘hippe’ caramel latte bij Starbucks, wachtend op anderen om te vergaderen. Hij begon de dag met college en zal vanavond bij een cursus korte verhalen schrijven zitten. We leven snel en we communiceren de hele dag door, ik weet bijvoorbeeld dat momenteel @blended (twitter) opgesloten zit in de aula van mijn oude middelbare school en dat @emn92 10 minuten te laat gaat komen. We praten met onze ouders en leraren, maar stiekem geven we niks om hun zorgen want we weten dat we onderdeel zijn van een nieuwe generatie met een andere levensstijl. Net zoals onze ouders. We live on fascination.

Tegan and Sara op de cover van Sainthood

Okay, back to business: Tegan and Sara. De lesbische tweeling zussen hebben hun zesde album uit gebracht en zijn al jaren mijn favoriete band. “Sainthood” bevat voornamelijk up-beat energetische rock in dezelfde stijl als “The Con.” (ik vind het uiteraard helemaal geweldig maar ja, ik ben geen expert)

Ze zijn gewoon menselijk en laten dat ook duidelijk merken met een grote dosis humor. Ze zijn op hun achttiende begonnen en de eerste opnamen die van ze bekend zijn (ik via-via in super slecht MP3 formaat heb gekregen) zijn origineel uitgebracht op cassettebandjes en in de studio van hun High School opgenomen. Na hun school diploma te hebben gekregen zijn ze vertrokken in een oude stationwagon met apparatuur en gewoon ‘on tour’ gegaan langs kleine clubs en enig podia die ze tegenkwamen. Ondertussen hebben ze geweldige nummers geschreven, zeg nou zelf:

Back to business:

Mensen die mij persoonlijk kennen zouden zeggen dat ik een MacFundamentalist ben. Apple-obsessed of misschien wel een ‘fanboy’ (dit laatste ontken ik trouwens). Dit bracht mij vanmorgen in een lastig parket toen ik op MacFreak.org een demo filmpje van Courier zag. Meteen begon ik te kwijlen, maar kan dat eigenlijk wel? Heeft Microsoft een Apple concept al gekopieerd voordat Apple het in productie bracht? Naar het lijkt hebben ze het toch echt zelf verzonnen en nog steeds is de heb-factor geweldig groot. Weg met je Kindle, je Netbook en je agenda/adresboek/kaart/tomtom, dit ding moet je hebben.

Wel zitten er natuurlijk enkele problemen bij waar Microsoft het in de technische uitvoering moeilijk mee gaat krijgen. (Ze sleept bijvoorbeeld een contactpersoon naar haar boekje om deze toegang te geven, hoe zou ze een contactpersoon slepen om diens gegevens in haar journal op te nemen?) Toch hoop ik oprecht dat Microsoft dit niet verknoeit zoals ze Vista, de Zune en zoveel andere producten hebben verknoeit en er echt een mooi product uit komt.

Net zo snel als Microsoft een interessant concept verzint verspelen ze ook weer enig respect je voor ze zou kunnen opbrengen.

Een nieuwe start
Momenteel ben ik begonnen aan een studie Theaterwetenschappen aan de UvA, je zou zeggen dat je daar plenty materiaal zou kunnen vinden voor een web log. De binnenstad levert überhaupt altijd voldoende munitie voor een blog. Daarom gaan we DailyNotations maar eens nieuw leven inblazen.

Hele slechte Bert Visscher imitatie stem: ‘Goh Henk, wat heb je al die tijd dan gedaan?’
Daar gaan we het binnenkort over hebben, nog even geduld.

While I was doing an additional course to see if I could raise my level of math understanding I walked around Leiden (small city in this country) for a bit and found a school. Because it was saturday the school was closed, but the steps to the front door were nice and sun covered so I decided to sit there and have dinner. (When I’m traveling alone my dinner usually consists of sandwiches or soup, in this case amazing tomato soup from Lebkov & Sons (check them out), but that’s another story.)

This school has a so called Mosquito hanging outside. It’s apparently a device that produces a high frequency tone that can only be heard by those under 25 and this sound is supposedly so annoying that teenagers can’t be around it. I personally didn’t really mind the thing, it was a bit annoying to be honest but not to the level which would ‘repel’ me. I’ve been to a lot of concerts recently and I don’t really pay too much attention to how loud my headphones are, but I highly doubt my hearing is very impaired. However, let’s think about this for a second. If we allow people to use this device, which physically drives one particular age group of  away, what’s next? It was invented to keep groups of ‘unruly’ teens away from shops and public areas, what about those who just wanted to do their shopping? With this device you do not repel abusive, violent or drunk individuals, but an entire age group.

In a tiny, tiny village called Oude Pekela a small shopping centre was suffering from so called ‘hangouderen’ which in essence means old people hanging around. They made loud comments about those who passed by and judged what people had in their carts. If we’re allowed to physically drive away young people with high pitched audio, what do we do with the annoying old people? Taser them?

Although I’m not really troubled by the sound the Mosquito makes, devices like these do not belong in public areas. Like the name says, they’re public. They need to be accessable for everyone, not just people over the age of 25. Even if one would want to stop teens and adolecents from going to these places, this is not the way to do it.

I’ve never really been a fan of sleepover-slumber-parties, but I see this kind of ignorance on almost every website and in real life amongst conservative parents. Girls and boys are friends. No, not friends with benefits, not secretly still doing it when you’re out of the room, just friends. Most of my friends are girls, that doesn’t mean I want to jump them as soon as their parents, or my own, are out of the room… This is all very 1920’s, dontcha think?

I don’t really get the reasoning behind this either. To these parties you’d invite your friends, people who all know each other and care about each other. Teens are, generally, not really into the whole fucking-in-front-of-your-twenty-best-friends thing. Especially in your own home. Another possibility could be that parents are scared little Jason’s birthday party is going to turn into a mass orgy. Since teenagers, especially those in the 10 to 14 year area where sleepovers are most common, are scared by and awkward even thinking about sex, I think it’s safe to assume this option is not going to happen either.

Not only are these reasonings idiotic, but I also see a major flaw in the chaste-one-sex-only-slumber-party. Homo/Bisexualism. Are homosexual teens invited? You could invite just one, but in that case you’d still need to be scared of him/her seeing one of the others naked. Or worse, what if the homosexual can’t control him or herself and ends up taking advantage of one of the pure and completely innocent teens?

What I’m trying to say: Get with it. Things changed since the 1950’s. People have friends of the opposite sex. Of course, that doesn’t mean they won’t jump each other after all. Scary developments in the 1960’s caused by those darn hippies made people realize they don’t have to be married to have sex… What if they take it one step further and teens start realizing you don’t even have to be engaged or in a serious relationship? Scary thoughts.

Conservative parents of America: lock your children in their rooms and meet in church to make the proper wedding arrangements.

Since it’s vacation, I’m indulging myself in one of my hobbies. Parenting forums. I realize it’s probably odd behavior of a seventeen year old, but I love to read parenting forums where people ask questions like “What to do with my lying 14 year old?!!” (The girl in question lied about taking a cookie from the biscuit tin).

In Dutch, there are two ways to address someone in the second person. ‘U,’ being the polite form, and ‘je’ being the more casual form. Traditionally in most regions children called their parents ‘u.’ This all changed in the 1950’s when most people with an IQ higher than that of a lawnmower discovered that, omgosh, children were people too. Since then it’s been ‘je.’ Now, on one of these forums a father wants to teach his three month old daughter to call him ‘u’ to show respect for her parents.

I read this with great amusement and horror and was honestly baffled people like this guy still exist. (Okay, not really. I’ve met my fair share of idiots in my 17 years and it takes a lot to still surprise me of mankind’s absolute stupidity.) What I’m horrified about is that (some) parents still think they deserve respect, simply for being a parent.

Eg. “I’m the father of this child, it’s about time I got some god damn respect!”

Respect isn’t something that is yours to request or demand. It’s yours to give to people you think deserve it. Even if this girl would end up calling her father ‘u,’ it would not be a sign of her respect for him. Just of what he’s making/training her to do.

The hand-made birthday card or hug after he comes home from work, those are signs of respect. Taking each other’s feelings into consideration and helping out, those are signs of respect.

In my honest opinion, the world will be a much better place when people start realizing that respect isn’t something that can be asked or demanded. It’s only something that can be given. (added bonus: It’s absolutely free)
